On-road vs ex-showroom price: how to compare car budgets
By Let’s Pick My Car · Published
Use on-road price for your purchase budget. Ex-showroom price is the vehicle’s starting price; your final outlay also depends on registration, road tax, insurance and the extras you choose. Compare quotes for the same variant, city and insurance cover.
What does each price include?
Ex-showroom is useful for comparing the vehicle price across trims. On-road is a budgeting total that adds the costs of putting that car on the road. A dealer’s package may also include accessories, extended warranty or service plans. Ask for separate lines so you can distinguish the vehicle and registration costs from optional purchases.
Why does the same car have different on-road prices?
Registration location, insurance cover, discounts and extras can change the final total. Our catalogue uses estimated Bengaluru on-road prices. It is not a quote for another city or a promise of a dealer’s final price. The methodology page lists the assumptions and source documents; confirm the itemised amounts before booking.
Compare two quotes in five steps
First match the exact variant, gearbox, model year and paint. Next separate ex-showroom price from discounts. Then compare registration charges line by line. Match insurance cover, insured value, deductibles and add-ons. Finally remove unwanted accessories and compare the amount payable, including any conditions attached to exchange or finance offers.
A worked example without hidden assumptions
Suppose two fictional quotes list the same car at ₹10 lakh ex-showroom. Quote A totals ₹12 lakh including ₹30,000 of accessories; quote B totals ₹11.85 lakh without accessories. Removing those accessories makes A ₹11.70 lakh. That only makes A cheaper on comparable terms if registration, insurance and all other included items also match. The example is arithmetic, not a current vehicle quote or a tax calculation.
Should you use the cheapest advertised number?
Use it to start a conversation, then ask what it includes. An exchange bonus is not available to every buyer, and a finance-linked discount should be considered alongside borrowing costs. Keep a written quote with its validity date. Our free quote comparison helps you organise these differences before making a decision.
