Best Electric Cars Under ₹20 Lakh in Bengaluru (2026)
By Prasanna · Published · Updated
Electric cars have become a real option below ₹20 lakh. The question for most buyers is whether the lower running cost justifies the higher price. This guide lists selected electric cars in our catalogue whose cheapest variant is under ₹20 lakh on-road in Bengaluru, with a running-cost comparison against petrol. Prices are our estimates, checked on 14 October 2026, and are not dealer quotes.
The figures in this article stay fixed to the Bengaluru estimates checked on 14 October 2026, even if you change the header’s registration state. The linked variant pages restore Karnataka on-road pricing. These are selected options, not an exhaustive ranking or a road-test verdict.
The shortlist
Range below is our mixed-use planning estimate per charge, not the certified figure. It is lower than a brochure number because it assumes real-world use.
| Car | Cheapest variant | Est. on-road, Bengaluru | Est. range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Tiago EV | Smart, 19.2 kWh | ₹7.73 lakh | 134 km |
| MG Comet EV | Executive | ₹8.71 lakh | 173 km |
| Tata Punch EV | Smart, 30 kWh | ₹10.76 lakh | 210 km |
| Tata Nexon EV | Creative+, 30 kWh | ₹14.40 lakh | 210 km |
| Kia Syros EV | HTK, 42 kWh | ₹15.53 lakh | 210 km |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO EV | AX5, 39.4 kWh (no charger) | ₹15.97 lakh | 276 km |
| MG Windsor EV | Excite, 38 kWh | ₹17.05 lakh | 228 km |
| Tata Curvv EV | Accomplished X, 55 kWh | ₹19.68 lakh | 358 km |
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Delta 49 kWh also fits at an estimated ₹18.56 lakh, with a 245 km planning range; check its exact variant. This is a selected shortlist, not every EV in the catalogue.
The Creta Electric starts at about ₹20.62 lakh and the MG ZS EV at ₹20.58 lakh, so both fall just outside this list. The 3XO EV price shown has no charger, so ask what a home charger costs and who fits it.
How we compare running cost
Our defaults are ₹10/kWh electricity, 90% charging efficiency, ₹111.68/litre petrol and ₹0.65/km EV service and wear. The ordinary petrol examples below add ₹0.90/km service and wear. These are editable planning assumptions, not tariffs or manufacturer maintenance quotations. Public-charger tariffs can differ substantially. Use your expected tariff and efficiency in the fuel-cost calculator.
EV cost/km = electricity tariff ÷ estimated km/kWh ÷ charging efficiency + maintenance allowance. The efficiency is the catalogue’s mixed-use planning input, not a measured result.
| Car | Est. km/kWh | Electricity + service/wear per km |
|---|---|---|
| Tiago EV | 7.0 | ₹2.24 |
| Comet EV | 10.0 | ₹1.76 |
| Punch EV | 7.0 | ₹2.24 |
| Nexon EV | 7.0 | ₹2.24 |
| XUV 3XO EV | 7.0 | ₹2.24 |
| Curvv EV | 6.5 | ₹2.36 |
| Windsor EV | 6.0 | ₹2.50 |
| Syros EV | 5.0 | ₹2.87 |
| e Vitara | 5.0 | ₹2.87 |
For comparison, the Tiago petrol example is ₹8.88/km and the Punch petrol example ₹8.35/km including service/wear. At 1,500 km/month, Tiago EV is about ₹3,356 versus ₹13,316 for Tiago petrol with these assumptions. The Comet’s 17.3 kWh battery is already recorded in our Comet guide; its 173 km estimate uses 10 km/kWh. It supports AC charging only.
Does the premium pay back?
These examples compare entry EV and entry petrol variants. Their equipment can differ, so the entire price gap is not necessarily the cost of electrification. Match equipment and gearbox before making your own calculation.
| Pair | Est. premium | Saving/km | Break-even distance | Months at 1,000 km | At 1,500 km | At 2,000 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiago EV vs entry petrol | ₹1.94 lakh | ₹6.64 | 29200 km | 29 | 19 | 15 |
| Punch EV vs entry petrol | ₹3.76 lakh | ₹6.11 | 61500 km | 62 | 41 | 31 |
| Nexon EV vs entry petrol | ₹5.45 lakh | ₹7.25 | 75200 km | 75 | 50 | 38 |
Break-even = upfront premium ÷ saving/km, calculated with unrounded inputs. This scenario includes energy and the broad service/wear allowances only. It excludes finance, charger purchase/installation, insurance differences, resale, major repairs and changing tariffs. It is not a promise of actual payback. See the running-cost guide.
Which EV for which buyer
- Tight city use and the lowest price: Tiago EV or Comet EV. Range is under 175 km in our estimates, so check each journey and how often you can charge, including a reserve.
- A small SUV: the Punch EV and Nexon EV have the same 210 km planning range at different prices.
- Longer trips: the Curvv EV has the longest range here at about 358 km, at the top of the budget.
- Cabin space: try the Windsor and Syros EV with your passengers and luggage. Their higher cost/km here comes from our efficiency assumptions, not a cabin-quality score.
What to check before you buy
- Where will you charge? An EV works best if you can charge at home or at work. Ask your housing society about charger permission.
- Charger fitment: confirm whether a charger is included and what the installation costs.
- Battery warranty: ask for the terms in writing.
- On-road price: our estimates exclude accessories, extended warranty and dealer charges. Use the quotation guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is an EV cheaper to run than petrol? In our tool, yes, by a large margin per km when charged at home at the default tariff. The saving shrinks if you charge in public.
What is the cheapest electric car in Bengaluru? In our catalogue it is the Tata Tiago EV Smart at an estimated ₹7.73 lakh on-road. That is a planning estimate, not a quote.
Does the on-road price include a home charger? Not always. The Mahindra XUV 3XO EV price shown here is for a variant without a charger. Confirm with the dealer.
Is the range I will get the same as the brochure? No. We use a mixed-use estimate, which is lower than the certified range. Real range depends on speed, AC use and load.
