How we score
Scores run from 0 to 100. Each car is represented by its strongest variant inside the budget for each measure, so its best-value variant can differ from its best-equipped one. Rankings compare catalogue data; they are not road tests, and they do not measure ride, handling, reliability or dealer service.
- Best overall
- A weighted blend of the five measures below. A guide without its own sales figure is scored on the other four, with their weights scaled up.
- Best value· 30% of overall
- Equipment (60%) and safety (40%) scores divided by price in lakh, then scaled so the best value in the budget scores 100.
- Safety· 25% of overall
- 18 points per applicable crash-test star (Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP, scoped to the rated variants), plus 5 each for six airbags and electronic stability control. A car without an applicable rating can score at most 10; untested is not the same as unsafe.
- Best equipped· 20% of overall
- 34 buyer-relevant features recorded the same way for every car, weighted by our essential / recommended / nice-to-have verdicts, as a share of the best-equipped variant in the catalogue.
- Lowest running cost· 10% of overall
- Estimated fuel or electricity plus servicing and wear per km for mixed use. The cheapest-to-run variant in the budget scores 100; others score in proportion. Electric estimates assume charging at home tariffs.
- Most popular· 15% of overall
- Average monthly domestic wholesale dispatches for October 2025–September 2026, from the month a model first reported sales. A nameplate shared with a derivative (Nexon and Nexon EV) is credited to the base guide only; families that combine different models are not credited to any one guide.
